Autograph letter signed, 2pp, 4to, Spring House, Merton, Surrey, 1 May 1894. To Mr. Raine, thanking him for his letter, and explaining that her husband's illness will prevent her from writing the story that Raine requested. Winter does offer to send to Raine "a little story, which I did in the winter for a dis-satisfied editor, who wept because it wasn't about soldiers, & made me do another one, when I would much rather have poisoned him. . . ." A bit soiled and worn; with some brownstaining (not affecting text); mounted to heavy paper, else good.

Henrietta Eliza Vaughan Stannard (1856-1911); English novelist who wrote under the pseudonym, "John Stange Winter." She became a prolific novelist, producing over 60 books, the best of which deal with military life. (Item ID: 8828)
