Autograph letter signed, 3pp, 8vo, Manchester, 4 September 1855. A post-war letter of literary camaraderie to the editor G. Linnaeus Banks, ordering his forthcoming 'Anecdotes of the War', and noting: "Nations are too apt to forget what it would be honourable in them to remember. One or two great names swallow up all the renown; -- but your 'Chronicles' will give each brave man his dues -- therefore success to them everywhere. I wish you would favor me with your paper occasionally -- and I wd forward one in return. What do you think of 'Maud'?" Soiled; all folds starting; else good.

Charles Swain (1801-1874); English poet. G. Linnaeus Banks (1821-1881); English poet, dramatist, author. Lord Alfred Tennyson's "Maud" was first published in 1855, and was initially met with public dislike. (Item ID: 8732)
