Autograph letter signed ("C. Swain"), 3pp, 4to, Chutwood Priory, "Thursday Morng", n.d. A touching personal and literary letter to "My dear Madam," thanking her for her note, and replying : "I had . . . seen the Notice. . . . I read it, gratified, certainly, but with mixed feeling: -- he had chosen my first poem, my first faltering step towards that Fame it was the great aim of my young ambition to reach. It recalled many Home remembrances, but it could not recal [sic] her who then sat at my side to hear her son read the lines, and thus Memory came to me far from happy and clad in funeral garb. The Poem and the Time were one; they seemed to breathe together. . . . I was again listening for that sweetest of all things -- a Mother's praise. . . ." Neatly reinforced with tape on the margin of the (blank) verso; just slightly foxed; else very good.

Charles Swain (1801-1874); English poet. (Item ID: 8731)
