Autograph letter signed ("F.A. Steel"), 2 1/4pp, 8vo, on letterhead of Talgarth Hall, Pennal, Machynlleth, 17 February, n.y. To an unidentified woman poet [see below], arranging to meet, thanking her for her letter, and writing: "The request I have to make is a bold one, perhaps one that is beyond your will to grant. Still, as evidence of my right to ask it, I am sending you . . . a manuscript. . . . [R]eading [it] will make you understand both my request & my motive for asking it, better than reams of explanations. Your verses struck me much as being appropriate to what I was writing at the time. . . . [Y]ou seldom write a line which does not appeal to me. . . ." Integral leaf detached and re-attached with linen tape; mounted to another sheet, with several biographical newscuttings pasted beneath the author's signature at the end. Some soiling, else good. Together with an envelope on which is written, in an unidentified hand, a note which indicates that the recipient of the letter was "Mrs. Nora Chesson, nee Hopper, 1871-1906, the poet and novelist. From the collection of her husband W.H. Chesson, fl. 1876-1950, journalist and critic."

Flora Annie Steel (1847-1929); English novelist, wrote about India. (Item ID: 8704)
