Autograph letter signed, 2pp, 4to, 30 Denziter[?] Street (with a small embossed crest of Bath), 8 June 1827, with integral address leaf. To Samuel Carter Hall: "I send you a translation [no longer present] of some verses of [illegible name] to Goethe. Independent entirely of any merit the verses may have I hope the names of these strangers may be of use to you. Send me, if you can a proof. . . . I remain in Dublin for about a month. . . . November recalls me to my detested slavery. I hope to be able to send you something more, but you ought not to limit me to the first of July." Split at center seam and reattached with paper tape; some browning and foxing; signature just lightly smudged; good.

Samuel Carter Hall (1800-1889); English author, editor. In 1826, Hall founded and edited an annual called The Amulet, a Christian and Literary Remembrancer, which he continued yearly until 1837. Also in 1826 Hall edited the Spirit and Manners of the Age, and in 1829-30 the Morning Journal. By the desire of Henry Colburn, he became sub-editor of the New Monthly Magazine in 1830 in place of Cyrus Redding, and on the retirement of Thomas Campbell succeeded him as editor.
