2 autograph letters signed, 6pp, 8vo, Morley Farm, Nothiam, 2 September, no year; and 33 Oakley Street, Chelsea, 24 July 1901. Both of these letters are to the publisher Grant Richards, the first from James Lyons: "Your letter this morning gave me a bad quarter of an hour. I will take the points in your order. I. Kencott's letter returned with explanation. II. Stokes letter returned. I sent only a portion of the M.S. as noted.... III. Brentano's letter returned. As I wired; Brentano's should I think be cabled telling them to save any unnecessary expense. My letter to them when sending copy was, I thought, quite clear as to its meaning regarding the necessity of setting the work up in America, i.e. to secure copyright only..... Certainly it is the only safe way, with a play especially. It is a short book & ought not to have cost so much. However, needless to say, I am awfully sorry it has happened....'' The second letter is from Robin Legge, who writes; "Fuller Maitland delivered his MS. Music in England in the XIX Century last night. I have not had time to read it yet. But will send it on to you in a day or two. I think from all accounts of the publishing business we were wise to postpone negotiations... of the further volumes until we see how F. Maitland's tome goes. Of course, I personally should have liked to complete the series of 3 at any rate, quickly. But much better to wait until things are more settled....'' Dustsoiled and a little worn. In good condition. (Item ID: 5312)
