Autograph letter signed, 2 1/4pp, 8vo, 23 Newman Street, no date. To a publisher whose name is illegible, offering some of her work: "I send for your approval a story founded on the incidents I named to you and also an article which was prepared for a Magazine before I had the pleasure of seeing you. As it will not be wanted for next month I thought I had better offer it for your choice but I apprehend the Boy's story is more likely to suit you because it is the shortest. If you do not like either I will write another for you in September or the latter end of August. . . .' Two small pieces torn away (affecting one word of text), but neatly repaired; traces of mounting along center fold, else good.

Barbara Hofland (1770-1844); English author. Upon the death of her husband in 1805, she published her first work, a volume of poems, in an attempt to support herself and her infant son. By 1824 she had produced upwards of twenty works of fiction, including

her most famous novel "The Son of A Genius", which first appeared in 1816.
