2 autograph letters signed, 7pp, 4to & 8vo, 22 Batchwood View, St. Albans, Herts, 9 & 20 July 1938. Both letters are to Mrs. Macdonald, and in the earlier one Palmer writes to ask the correct spelling of her name: "I have written it as Macdonald in the book .... In case there is soon a second edition of the book, & it looks rather like it, your name will have to be altered. As I used a whole poem to illustrate you, Dent ought to have sent you a book .... He has turned out much too niggardly.'' In the second letter Palmer discusses the book he recently published, with Macdonald's contribution, his hopes for it, and the proofs of which he is hoping to sell: "Now fancy your getting hold of proofs, but they must have been second or third proofs. The first proofs are galleys. In fact my alterations and revisions were so excessive that proof-corrections have cost me nearly 40 pounds .... most of these were made in the galleys. I have two lots of complete galleys .... I am hoping to sell for from 5 to 30 pounds and am hoping for success of the book in America, the most likely place for a buyer. The duplicate galley proofs ... I'll sell to anyone for the price of the book. Other proofs I have as well. Now about the poem. It was not my discovery but Waldman's then I took it over. A large number, however, of the other poems in that anthology were handed to him by me. Douglas Goldring who is reviewing P.V.P. .... wrote me a letter the other day. He specially mentioned one poem ... it was yours .... When the headmaster of one of the largest London schools read your poem in Waldman's anthology he got into a great excitement. He even got onto the phone with it ....'' Included with these letters is a page from the New English Weekly, containing a review by Desmond Hawkins of Palmer's Post Victorian Poetry, which was published in 1938. Letters just a little worn, but very good. (Item ID: 2361)
