Price: $250.00

2 Autograph letters signed, 3 1/4pp, 8vo, on printed letterheads of 33, Linden Gardens, W., and The Worcestershire Brine Baths Hotel, Droitwich, 29 December 1914, and 11 April 1915, respectively. Both to the publisher, Elkin Mathews, on literary matters: "Mr. Law . . . wrote subsequently apologizing for his mistake . . . & saying he felt almost sure the verses ('Le Silence des Heures') are by the Swiss poet Henry Spiers. . . . He must be somewhat of an expert in French poetry. I know nothing of Spiers. He suggests that I should translate some of Albert Samani. I don't know him either. Do you?. . . ."; and ". . . Will you kindly let me know what you would estimate for (1) Binding -- in similar form as before -- and (2) Advertising. . . . [I]t seems a great pity to waste the 300 copies in stock, & if the fount could be, at any rate, nearly matched, as economy is a great object, I do not see why the few pages wh require alteration should not be reprinted. Then all that would be wanted would be a new title page & a short preface. . . ." Remains of (yellowed) cellophane mounting tape; some general soiling and wear, and one letter with a very small tear at fold (no loss); else good overall.

Sir George Greenwood (1850-1928); English lawyer, author, politician, cricketer, animal welfare reformer and Shakespearean scholar. (Item ID: 22855)
