Autograph letter signed ("J. Montgomery"), 3 1/4pp, 4to, Sheffield, 24 June 1813, with integral holograph mailing address leaf. To Basil Montagu of London, in response to a professional query ". . . whether I am a printer. . . . Besides the News-paper, a considerable variety of printing work is executed in my office, -- principally small jobs, as I have never gone out of my course to seek better business. . . . I have three pamphlets at press, and a standing fund of employment in a book of Arithmetic. . . . I should be very glad to undertake the printing of your proposed pamphlet, if you were not urgent. . . . I thank you truly for the considerate kindness of your proposal, but shall regret less not to avail myself of it, than I should to avail myself unworthily. . . . I can less afford to lose your good will than this friendly token of it. . . ." Torn in several places (with a few crude patches) from removal of wax seal; splitting; soiled and browned. With remains of prior mounting and a number of small holes (some loss of text).

James Montgomery (1771-1854): Scottish poet and editor, highly regarded by Robert Southey and others. (Item ID: 22314)
