Autograph letter signed ("Car[?] Norton"), 3 1/2pp, 8vo, n.p., n.d. To Mr. Barlow, enclosing a poem [no longer present], and sending an unidentified ". . . little gift with the greatest interest. . . . After I had read it myself I lent it to an American Judge who is writing some works on the operations of the brain, which it turns my brain to hear him talk of, more especially as he discusses the subject in such a low & inarticulate voice that the operation of hearing scarcely goes on in my head during the flow of conversation. However I triumphantly read the page which alludes to the power of 'forbidding thought' because he had contradicted me over that point. I am a little angry with you for not giving me notice when you were to lecture on the subject. . . . I shall talk of the brain when I see you -- and I have a great mind to talk in Mr. Carleton's voice, on the principle that . . . you should have to answer my whole sentence of reasoning without hearing more than five words of it. . . ." With a protective tissue sheet tipped-in between leaves; remains of prior mounting hinges; lightly worn, else good.

Caroline Elizabeth Sarah Norton (1808-1877); English poetess. (Item ID: 22309)
