Carte-de-visite photograph by an un-named studio, portraying the author seated (full-length) in a chair with one arm resting beside several books on a table. Signed by Bradley with his pseudonym in the lower mount and inscribed on the reverse: "For Mrs. Benjn. Brooks / with the compts: of / Cuthbert Bede. / Denton Rectory / Stilton. / Decr. 19. 1866." Trimmed [?]. Perhaps lightly uniformly faded, in very good to fine condition overall.

Edward Bradley (1827-1889); English author, friend and associate of Cruikshank, Frank Smedley, Mark Lemon, and Albert Smith. Bradley generally wrote for the press under the pseudonym of "Cuthbert Bede", the names of the two patron saints of Durham. His one marked literary success was obtained in 1853, when he produced The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green, an Oxford Freshman. With numerous illustrations designed and drawn on the wood by the author." Bradley contributed to numerous periodicals including Dickens's All the Year Round. (Item ID: 21973)
