Lengthy autograph letter signed ("S:A: Hart"), 3 1/4pp, 4to, Locanda della Scala, Siena, 24 June 1842, with integral holograph mailing address (postmarked and browned). A detailed letter addressed to Robert Cole of London, on numerous matters, including the disbursement of an estate, and discussing artistic elements of his Italian tour: "I have been much gratified in Perugia with the works of Pietro Perigino[?], the Master of Raphal. Some of Pietro's best are here as well as many of his pupils & in a private house . . . one of the most perfect works of Raphal[?] tho' but six inches in diameter, being a circular picture. At Cortona[?] are some magnificent Etruscan remains. . . . . I was surprized[sic] on being shewn the museum here by the Librarian to see in its Library, a fine portrait of Northcote by himself, one of his best studies is thus shut up in a somewhat out of the way mountain city of the South of Europe but it is creditable to the town. . . . Portraits of Lord Cowper & another are also here. At . . . the houses of Petrarch & Giorgio Vasari, Painter, Architect & Biographer of Artists was after Michal Angelo's [sic] house the most interesting painter's domain I have yet seen. . . ." Torn at removal of wax seal (portions of seal still present; some soiling and foxing; remains of prior mounting, and with a few tears (some repaired with a paper patch; no loss of text); still, good.

Solomon Hart (1806-1881); English painter; librarian of the Royal Academy. (Item ID: 19702)
