Price: $150.00

2 autograph letters signed ("R.S. Lauder"), 2 1/4pp, 7 Carlton Street, Edinburgh, and 35 Upper Charlotte Street, Fitzroy Square, 25 December 1855, and n.d. To different recipients, concerning paintings. In the first letter, addressed to "My Dear Bicknell", Lauder accepts a commission, thanking him for his "suggestions regarding the portraits, which of course I will be delighted to undertake, and would put everything aside, start at a moments notice, and at least break ground, if your kind intentions should be successful. I am released from my duties at the Academy till the seventh of January. . ." The second note is addressed to the curator or secretary of an exhibition providing information on a painting titled "Meg Merrilies and the dying Smuggler", giving what is presumably a 4-line quotation from the work by Sir Walter Scott, listing a price of 150 guineas, and instructing: "If this picture is not sold in Birmingham, you will oblige me by sending it to Edinburgh address to Mr Jas Lauder. . . . " Remains of prior mounting paper and yellowed cellophane tape; edgewear and with a few minor tears; slight bleed of ink at title (and thin areas around title and price as if each were scratched out and replaced); else good.

Robert Scott Lauder (1803-69); Scottish painter. (Item ID: 19563)
