Autograph letter signed ("J.L. Agur"), 1 1/2pp, 4to, Stepford Place, 8 January 1820. To Joseph Harding, defending himself against a question raised by his correspondent: "I doubt not the truth of the entry against my name, dated Nov. 20th, 1816 showing that a drawing was on that day sent to me, of the Earl of Northumberland; but I must plead in mitigation of punishment your subsequent approbation of my conduct . . . . The accompanying proof will I hope show I have not been totally inattentive to the Earl in question, I challenge not my jury -- They are all, all honourable men, but throw myself entirely on their mercy. . . . In about three weeks (engraver's time) I hope to deliver the antiques I am now about, when I will begin the finishing of your plate and complete it with all speed --" Lightly soiled; split at center fold; small tear to lower edge; mounted to backing sheet; with integral address leaf (torn from wax seal), overall in good condition.
