Carte-de-visite photograph. A full-length portrait of Warren standing in front of a library backdrop, with his arms crossed across his chest, facing the camera. Imprint on the lower mount of Ernest Edwards, 20, Baker St. W. Ink identification on the reverse in an unidentified contemporary hand. Some fading, speckling and soiling.

Samuel Warren (1807-1877); English barrister, novelist. Warren is chiefly remembered for his "Ten Thousand a Year " (3 vols., 1841), one of the most sensationally popular of Victorian novels. As a lawyer he became Queen's Counsel in 1851, and in addition to his literary works, published A Popular and Practical Introduction to Law Studies (1835, enlarged 1845), Select Extracts from Blackstone's Commentaries (1837), A Manual of the Parliamentary Law of the United Kingdom (1852 and 1857), and A Manual of the Law and Practice of Election Committees (1853).
