4 autograph letters signed, 8pp, 4to and 8vo (mourning paper), Greatham, Pulborough, Sussex (one on printed letterhead, the others addressed by hand), 11 December 1924, 13 and 20 April 1925, and 9 October 1925, with one original holograph mailing envelope. To "Miss Liddell," concerning an anthology she is compiling: "[11 Dec. 1924] . . . I am happy to give you the permission you desire for the inclusions from the works of Mrs. Meynell & Francis Thompson, Perhaps you will kindly cause two copies of the book to be sent to me for The Bibliographical Library of each of these authors I have here. . . . T]he publishers wd be satisfied by a total fee of two gnas. for the four pieces. If you find this fee burdensome, please let me know, & I will try to arrange otherwise. . . ."; "[13 April 1925] I have to . . . say how happy I shall be to see Renouncement, & any other poem of Mrs Meynell's, added to the anthology"; "[20 April 1925] I am very sorry not to say yes to any request of yours; but the trouble is that, apart from my feeling of incompetence, I have had other similar requests, to which I have said a 'no' that becomes almost binding on my future action. I could go into details that wd make my position intelligible, but I think you will understand. . . ."; and "[7 Oct. 1925] Very many thanks for . . . the copies of The Coming of the Moon. . . . I think that the title, rather baffling at first sight, is one to which the reader becomes reconciled, & even devoted, before he reaches the end of the book. The selection seems to me to be admirable: & my only stumblings were over the between that ought to be within in the 2nd line of the last verse. . . . I mention these so that the corrections may be made in any future edition. What you say of your feeling for Mrs. Meynell's poems gives me joy. There will be a biography some day: but not just now. . . ." Some light soiling and wear; two sheets with a hole at upper left (presumably from removal of a fastener; no text disturbed); else good.

Wilfrid Meynell (1852-1948); English poet, editor, husband of Alice Meynell. The Coming of the Moon: an Anthology of Quiet Verse, compiled by E.M. Liddell, was published by Burns, Oates and Washbourne in 1925. (Item ID: 19035)
