To Mr. and Mrs. Schwabe, inviting them to a meeting "this afternoon [with] 20 or 30 of the leading native gentlemen at . . . (the 'Public Welfare' Club). . . for a little conversation on the Congress & other questions. . . . [P]erhaps it would prove interesting to Mrs. Schwabe & yourself. . . ."; and reminiscing about ". . . a charming discussion which you gave me, at the Club House in Bombay. . . . I am writing another book, on India, of the same character as 'My Trip Round the World' but a little more serious. I am just now working on Darjeeling. . . ." Remains of prior mounting on versos; some soiling; else good.

William Sproston Caine (1842-1903); English politician and temperance reformer. In 1880 he was elected MP for Scarborough and was appointed civil lord of the Admiralty in the Gladstone administration of 1880 - 1885. Caine's A Trip Round The World In 1887-8 was first published by Routledge in 1888.
