3 typed letters signed, 3pp, 4to (two on thin 'aerogramme's' with integral address leaves), on printed letterhead of Columbia University, New York, and 300 West 108 Street, New York, 1 August 1957, 25 November 1957 and 25 January 1958. To Clive Sansom in Tasmania, on a number of literary matters: "[1 Aug. 1957] You are quite welcome to use in your forthcoming anthology, 'The World of Poetry', the two extracts from my article in The New York Times Book Review . . . I should prefer to have you quote these passages in their entirety, if you can. The quotation would then commence: 'Dante was constrained to choose between being a Black or a White; in more than 600 years the colors have changed, but the poet's task remains the same. For poetry is not based on opinions. . . .' Enclosed herewith are notices of two recent books of mine. . . . POETRY IN OUR TIME is published here by The Columbia University Press. . . . ."; "[25 Nov. 1957] . . . there are several passages in [Poetry in Our Time] relevant to your subject. The other book: Poetry Handbook . . . is due to appear in London. . . . Altho its dry sub-title is 'A Dictionary of Terms', the entries on 'poetry', 'poem', 'rhythm', 'metre', 'rhyme' and the introductory essay would be of interest to you. . . ."; and "[25 Jan. 1958] What a great variety there is among [your poems]! It seems to me that they . . . are witnesses, testifying to the scope of your responsiveness, and its warmth. Some of the less ambitious lyrics seemed to me more telling, perhaps because they were willing to imply more than they said, than the quasi-religious, quasi-philosophical poems. . . . I was entertained by the game you played with old John Donne. . . . [The book] was fibred with humanity, so rare a quality these days." Creases; some marginal tears and edgewear; light soiling; with a few pencilled annotations.
