2 autograph letters signed (one a third-person letter, signature in text), 3pp, 8vo, Reigate Hill, Surrey, 15 June and 4 August 1853. To Mr. Hopkins, concerning books ". . . which she found awaiting her at Mr. Virtue's. . . . She will return them as soon as she has read them, and promises herself much pleasure in the perusal. . . ."; and to an unidentified recipient, writing: "I have this afternoon forwarded your three books to the Reform Club. . . . I am extremely obliged to you for the loan of them; and though the state of my health had precluded my making any literary use of them, I have had a great comfort in committing to memory some of the beautiful lines marked by your pencil. Those, especially, beginning 'My cares like blessed thistles are to me, / Which wholesome are, altho' they bitter be,' I have repeated to myself many times a day, though more as a pupil than a master. . . ." Remains of prior mounting; some soiling and rubbing; one letter lightly foxed; else good.

Anne Manning (1807-1879); English novelist, author of Mary Powell. (Item ID: 18720)
