Original cabinet photograph by Window & Grove, 63 Baker St, Portman Square, London, depicting the cast of the play, "Diplomacy," as performed at the Garrick Theatre in 1893. Pictured are Arthur Cecil (Baron Stein), Lady Monckton (Dora's Mother), Miss Olga Nethersole (Countess Zicka), Mr. Bancroft (Count Orloff), Mr. Hare (Henry Beauclere), Gilbert Hare (Algie Fairfax), Mrs. Bancroft (Lady Fairfax), Mr. Forbes-Robertson (Julian Beauclere), and Miss Kate Rooke (Dora). The subjects' initials are written in ink (in an unknown hand) beneath the photograph identifying each of the actors, and there are further neat inscriptions on the recto giving actors' names and the characters that they portrayed, with a note reading: "Seen Sat. 18th March 1893 Boys and I -- Pit -- afternoon Sat. 25th March 1893 Whole family, Aunt Lily, Ramsays, Miss Nicol, Dr. Collie. -- upper circle -- W in pit." A touch faded and worn, but in very good state.

"Diplomacy" was an adaptation by Clement S. Scott and Benjamin Charles Stephenson of "Dora" by French playwright, Victorien Sardou, and was hugely popular. According Nicoll, 'XIX Century Drama 1850-1900" (II, p. 557), the play had originally been performed at the Prince of Wales Theatre, opening on 1 Dec. 1878. (Item ID: 17656)
