Autograph letter signed, one page, 8vo, Chiswell near Oxford, 11 February 1920, with original mailing envelope. To Edward W. Sheldon, Esq., of New York City, Bridges writes (as temporary secretary): "I thank you very much for your helpful donation to the S.P.E. . . .I will see that your name is in the next list of members. I hope that we may get some representative American opinion for publication -- the prospects of the Society depend greatly on the active cooperation of its members. . . ." A bit browned and a trifle soiled, else good.

"In 1913 Bridges founded the Society for Pure English in concert with Bradley, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Logan Pearsall Smith, though the War postponed its activity until 1919. For the rest of his life this was, after poetry, Bridges's principal public interest." [DNB]
