Original typescript, 14pp, 4to, n.p., n.d. A political article, originally titled "Majority Rule: Theory and Practice", though here crossed through in pencil and replaced with "Minority Rule in America." Apparently the setting copy with the usual printer's instructions (and soiling of the paper), a number of pencilled corrections in the text (presumably authorial and in Beard's hand), and the red stamps of "The American Mercury" indicating page and issue numbers on each sheet. Stains from paper clips in the margins; first page a trifle chipped, else very good.

Charles Austin Beard (1874-1948); American historian. Beard was especially concerned with the relationship of economic interests and politics. Among his many published works are An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution (1913), American City Government (1912) and the long-standard American Government and Politics (1910). His A Charter for the Social Sciences in the Schools (1932) had an enormous influence on the teaching of history, and he became widely known to the general reading public through The Rise of American Civilization (2 vol., 1927, repr. 1933) and its sequels (Vol. III and Vol. IV), America in Midpassage (1939), and The American Spirit (1943), all written in collaboration with his wife, Mary Ritter Beard (1876-1958). Beard also helped to found the New School for Social Research. (Item ID: 16778)
