Carte-de-visite photograph of a 3/4 length profile (left) of Milnes seated in a leather chair, with a somber expression on his face. Faint penciled identification beneath the image on the mount, with the printed identification on the verso: "Published by Mason and Co., 7, Amen Corner, London. The Portrait by Kilburn, 222 Regent Street." Nice stark contrast, perhaps very lightly soiled.

Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron Houghton (1809-1885); English author and member of Parliament. He was among the first to recognize the genius of Keats and in 1848 published his Life, Letters and Literary Remains of John Keats. In addition he secured a pension for Tennyson and widely proclaimed Swinburne's genius. His own poetical works included Poems of Many Years (1838) and Palm Leaves (1844). (Item ID: 12592)
