Carte-de-visite photograph. A close-up head-and-shoulders portrait of the author in 3/4 (left) profile. He is wearing a dark jacket and has his beard cropped close to his face, tapering off to a longer point beneath his chin. Imprint of Mora, 707 Broadway, N.Y. on the mount beneath the image. Corners rounded, minor fading and soiling, but in good to very good condition overall. Penciled annotations.

Cincinnatus Heine (or Hiner) Miller (1839-1913); American poet, more commonly known by his nickname, "Joaquin Miller". Miller was not unfamiliar with the borrowing of money. He "was all his life a splendid poseur, with his expensive boots which he said he wore because he could not afford shoes, his diamond ring (given him 'by a duchess') worn in a cabin where the door was always open so tramps could sleep on the floor, his gallon jug of wine, his synthetic rain pattering from pipes on the roof to 'inspire' him, his skin covering for his bed, his tales of impossible adventure and high prowess." (Kunitz and Haycraft) (Item ID: 12591)
