Carte-de-visite portrait. A close-up head-and-shoulders view of Hullah in a dark suit and vest, looking off towards his left. Imprint of Elliott & Fry, 55 Baker Street, Portman Square, London, W., on the front and back of the card. Some oxidization and fading, with some light soiling and spotting and general wear. Good.

J. Pyke Hullah (1812-1884); English composer, teacher of choral singing, and writer on music. He was a pupil at the Royal Academy of Music, 1833-5, with Fanny Dickens, through whom he met her younger brother, Charles Dickens. An opera by Hullah, "The Village Coquettes," set to words by Dickens, was produced at the St. James's Theatre on 5 Dec. 1836, and ran for sixty nights with great success. (Item ID: 12554)
