Autograph note signed, one page, large 8vo, Somerset House, Inland Revenue, 12 August 1856. A note to Ainsworth sending a manuscript copy of Watts' poem "Ode to Fortune" which is present on the verso of the note and continues onto the integral leaf and one third of page 4: " You have had a Poem of mine so long in type, that I am doubtful whther you may not have had enough of them. However, I send another on the other side, upon speculation." The poem consists of nine four-line stanzas and begins: "He who need not my lady fair / May smile when Fortune's self refuses / Indifference knows not Despair / Who nothing asks for, nothing loses." Creased, with tears starting at folds (no text affected). Soiled on verso; good.
